In the Dr. Seuss classic “Horton Hears a Who,” Horton the elephant struggles and fights desperately to prove to his culture that there is a tiny hidden world (Whoville) filled with priceless individuals in an insignificant dust speck. The overwhelming majority believe Horton is crazy, and they try to destroy the dust speck with the hope of enlightening Horton and bringing him to his senses. Knowing that there is real life in Whoville, Horton resists until he is restrained and can battle no more. As Horton’s culture begins the process to destroy the life in Whoville, Horton tells the individuals they must scream as loud as they can so the outside world knows that “they are here.” All individuals in Whoville begin screaming “We Are Here,” and it is not until the smallest voice joins in that the cloud of silence is lifted and the outside world realizes they are destroying life and the slaughter stops.
Today there is a tiny hidden world of beautiful human beings with Down syndrome hidden in the womb who are being targeted and eliminated because a lost, misguided culture has determined that these people are defective and do not need to be here. I often feel like Horton when I advocate and try to make society see and understand that children like my beautiful daughter Chloe are priceless, precious gifts this world desperately needs. Chloe has planted more positive seeds in 10 years than most people do in a lifetime, and I often wonder what I did right to be blessed with such a perfect daughter. When I realized that 90%+ of children diagnosed prenatally with Down syndrome are targeted and eliminated, I made it my mission to show people that these remarkable children possess incredible ABILITIES and “They Are Here” to spread Light into a culture that has embraced much darkness.
Chloe recently spent one week meeting with several policymakers and government leaders to connect her “Brilliant Soul” and show how one small Voice (like in Whoville) can make an incredible impact for LIFE – “We Are Here”: http://pattan.net-website.s3.amazonaws.com/images/partner/2013/06/28/One%20Week%20in%20the%20Life%20of%20an%20Advocate.pdf
People must wake up soon and start defending children like Chloe or the day will arrive when all we will be able to say about individuals with Down syndrome is “They Were Here.” There are many distractions competing for our time and energy in today’s enlightened, modern world, and it is very easy to lose focus. If we don’t soon raise our Voices and make protecting the sanctity of Human Life our #1 priority, this tiny dust speck Earth in our vast universe will become covered with permanent darkness. This point of no return is quickly approaching, and please join me in raising your Voice for LIFE “WE ARE HERE!” – Psalm 139:13-14 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
