Cardinal Dolan Congratulates President Obama On Re-Election

Promises bishops will continue to work to defend life, marriage, religious freedom
Urges President to work for most vulnerable, including unborn, poor, immigrants
Asks for restoration of civility to the public order

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, congratulated President Barack Obama, November 7, the day after his re-election as President of the United States.

Cardinal Dolan promised the prayers of the bishops saying that “The Catholic Bishops of the United States offer our prayers that God will give you strength and wisdom to meet the difficult challenges that face America.”

He added that “In particular, we pray that you will exercise your office to pursue the common good, especially in care of the most vulnerable among us, including the unborn, the poor, and the immigrant. We will continue to stand in defense of life, marriage, and our first, most cherished liberty, religious freedom. We pray, too, that you will help restore a sense of civility to the public order, so our public conversations may be imbued with respect and charity toward everyone.”

His letter follows.

 

Dear President Obama,

In my capacity as President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, I write to express my congratulations on your re-election as President of the United States.The people of our country have again entrusted you with a great responsibility.The Catholic Bishops of the United States offer our prayers that God will give you strength and wisdom to meet the difficult challenges that face America.

In particular, we pray that you will exercise your office to pursue the common good, especially in care of the most vulnerable among us, including the unborn, the poor, and the immigrant.We will continue to stand in defense of life, marriage, and our first, most cherished liberty, religious freedom.We pray, too, that you will help restore a sense of civility to the public order, so our public conversations may be imbued with respect and charity toward everyone.

May God bless you and Vice President Biden as you prepare for your second term in service to our country and its citizens.

    I think Dolan thinks more of Obama than Obama thinks of Dolan.

    Nov. 8th: where have all our Cardinals, Bishops and Priests been all these years while millions of human lives have been terminated? Why aren’t they standing at the pulpit and in the marketplaces demanding that the killing stop?! A few read letters the Sunday before the election telling people they should not vote for candidates who are pro abortion or pro gay marriage – too little, too late. I have never, ever heard consistent teachings about the sacredness of life or of marriage between a man and a woman and I’ve been around. More Church leaders came out strong when their funds were threatened by the HHS Mandate. Many Parishes will not allow pro life people to speak to groups – how many are Democrats? I am a life long Democrat…born into a Democratic family…I left when it became obvious that they are the party of death. There are good men and women in both parties but only the Democratic party’s platform specifically and aggressively promotes and support the killing of human babies in the womb, same sex marriage and which is eroding freedom of religion…Obama again receive a great number of Catholic votes…Cardinal Dolan sat down to party with Obama at the Al Smith dinner because he feels that’s the way to go but he refused to attend a dinner where Judi Brown would have shared his table because she ‘criticizes’ Bishops who don’t stand for life…go figure. There are good Cardinals and Bishops in the American Church and they speak out and witness to life and to marriage and to the teachings of Christ through the Catholic Church…but they are few. Where are the rest?

      Go to Traditional Latin Mass, where you can see hope. Not only that you get deep encountering with Jesus in the Mass, but you see many faithful bear fruit, I mean babies and kids. That is where the future of the Church is. I can never go back to the new mass. It tastes nothing. When the flavor is gone, so is the soul.

        Nov. 9th: j2y…thanks for your response…I have hope and I see hope on the faces of those who attend Mass daily…the Mass, the Eucharist, these feed our hope whether the Mass is traditional or novus ordo…we have both in my Parish. There is also a Benedictine Abbey nearby where they celebrate Mass in Latin with Gregorian Chant…wherever we go to Mass we need to pray much and often for the leaders of the Catholic Church, especially here in America. And we need to pray for Cardinals and Bishops who are standing strong and publicly with the Church and her teachings. Cardinal George said he would go to prison rather than comply with any law that stands against the teachings of the Church…pray for him because he is a living martyr, standing strong despite his battle with cancer…

          I disagree. Cardinal George is not a living martyr. He has consistently compromised the faith. He has not confronted the wicked “Catholic” politicians like Daley who consistently dissented from Church teaching and were scandalous in their support of such things as homosexual marriage. Yes, we need to pray for our Bishops and priests, because without strong, orthodox clergy many souls go to hell. Don’t be too quick to canonize the Bishops. We don’t know how they stand with God. If you love them, pray for them before and after death.
