Poem: “Playthings of the Gods”

Playthings of the Gods

Playthings of the gods
Who aren’t really gods but still…
Paul and Peter warned us
Of their errands and effronteries
And we who ape their powers
Pretend possession of their insights
But they are greater rebels
Deep in their conspiracies

Between their world and this
A gulf exists
They peer across
But may not touch the soil
Except through us
We are the hands
The eyes
The hates of them

“You will be as gods,’ they said
Through their ambassador,
‘As we are now
So shall you be
Not really gods, but still
Like us in all but hopelessness.”
They have no hope,
Require willing hands
