Sing to the Lord a New Song

“Sing to the Lord a new song” (Psalm 98:1).

A reflection on today’s Sacred Scripture:

Today’s Responsorial Psalm speaks of the freshness of prayer we experience with a new life in Christ. Our prayers of petition become enhanced by prayers of praise—that is, God becomes the object of our prayers and we begin to honor Him purely because He is God.

Once our hearts change, our prayers intensify with the understanding that God is Love. We no longer just want something from Him, but wish to unite ourselves to Him. In doing so, our appeals receive His immediate response, which is the knowledge that He alone is enough and is far greater than any gift He could ever give us.

When we stop dwelling on our needs and adapt our prayer life to one of pure praise, God answers with His peace, which is really what we’re longing for. Holy Spirit, turn our prayers into songs! Lead our changed hearts to the One who never changes.

“A song is a thing of joy; more profoundly, it is a thing of love.” – St. Augustine
