Why President Obama Lied

Like Your Plan Keep Your Plan - Obama

New York Magazine — no conservative publication, that — has a very well done video compilation of the many, many times Barack Obama told people, “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan”. By my count, there are 23 “you can keep your plan” clips in that video, spanning two years from October 2008 through September 2010. Alas, I can’t figure out how to embed it here, but it is well worth a look: “If You Like Your Plan…” Supercut.

Investor’s Business Daily looks to have hit upon the precise reason why Pres. Obama lied about this so often, an average of at least twice a month for two years:

Back in 1994, when Bill Clinton was pushing his own version of “comprehensive health reform,” the insurance industry launched its infamous “Harry and Louise” ads to deliver a simple message: The Clinton plan would force families to give up their own health plans.

In one of these, the middle-class couple pores over a pile of documents at the kitchen table, while a narrator intones about how “things are changing, and not all for the better,” and how “the government may force us to pick from a few plans designed by government bureaucrats.”

“Louise” then complains that “having choices we don’t like is no choice at all,” and the ad concludes with the couple saying, “They choose, and we lose.”

The campaign was devastating. Even though Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress, Clinton’s bill never made it out of congressional committees.

So when President Obama decided to take another stab at health care, he was determined to avoid that pitfall. He endlessly promised in the most emphatic way possible that under his plan, Harry and Louise would have nothing to worry about.

Indeed, from this video at YouTube, it sure looks like IBD is right:

When the president lies, every American should take it personally. I have reason to take it even more personally than most do; here is the “discontinuation” letter I got from my health-insurance provider:

Highmark BCBS Pgh Letter

The “Fact Checker” at the Washington Post — no conservative publication, that, either — gives four Pinocchios (on a scale of 1 to 4) to Barack Obama’s repeated “you can keep your plan” claim; that is, even one of the flagship liberal publications admits they’re a whole pile of whoppers.

Four Pinocchios

I give him five.

Because that’s what liars do. He lied his way into the presidency not once but twice and the lie lives on.

Tell me lies tell me sweet little lies but just feed me is the chant of 42% of so called Americans whose favorite primary chant is the Internationale.
The story is not the Marxist Mohammedan, Barak Hussein. The real story is the

propaganda media who put this regime in power and continues to prop them up.
It takes a corrupt nation to make that a possibility and a reality.
    Welcome to the third world.

I read here another article about President Obama.

I know CL does not like the president of the US, but is it appropriate to publish article after articel denigrating him.

Would mostg readers of CL prefer to read about Presidnrt Obama or Jesus Christ?

    Would you?

    • Chelsea Zimmerman

Once again, Noel, there are PLENTY of articles here specifically about hope, love and Jesus Christ. I’m sorry you have a problem with some of the other articles we offer here, but, as you can see, some people, like goral, do appreciate them. Unfortunately, we can’t please all of the people all of the time.

    • ELC

Most readers, I’m sure, can read what they want to read. And some, I suspect, can even manage to refrain from reading what they don’t want to read.

Your rhetorical question implies that you have some special knowledge about what most readers would prefer. Unless you have been given a private revelation about who wants to read what, it is unclear to me why you would know better than others (including myself, the editor-at-large, and the editor-in-chief) what people want to read. But it is my understanding that a private revelation is binding only on the person or persons to whom it is given.

Or do you not actually read the articles to which you object? That is mere effrontery, for which I can imagine no excuse, and which deserves no reply.

    • Stacy Peterson

If you don’t like reading these articles DON’T. The Bible is free.

The great Democrat, Thomas Jefferson said: Rebellion to tyranny is obedience to God. Obedience to God is the first Great Commandment that Jesus taught us.
Exposing liars and hypocrites is what Jesus did and continues to do through his loyal servants.
Supporting and protecting liars is the work of the father of lies.

    Goral,

many thanks for your reply to me.

I always enjoy hearing from you even though we disagree, but I acknowledge your right to hold political opinions different from me. That is what democracy is about.

However I do think we hear too much about Obama here.

Is Jesus Christ not more important than President Obama?. Perhaps it would be preferable to hear of “Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (NRSV, 1 Cor 2:2).

    • Chelsea Zimmerman

See my previous comment. You DO hear of Jesus Christ here…everyday in fact. I wish you would stop implying that you do not. I’ve never done the math, but I’m quite certain that there are MANY more articles on here about Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith than there are about president Obama.

    • Chelsea Zimmerman

In fact, if you search the term “Jesus” on the CL homepage, you will get 66 pages worth of results, compared to just 26 pages when you search for “Obama”.

    • Chelsea Zimmerman

So, in other words, YES, Jesus Christ is more important than Barack Obama, and our articles reflect that.

    • ELC

How preposterous. I am reminded of the silly Protestant objection to the Rosary, because more of its prayers are addressed to Mary than to the Lord.

  • noelfitz

    Hi Chelsea,

many thanks for your three replies to me.

I do hope my post did not upset anyone, as that was not my intention. I never implied we do not hear of Jesus in CL; my point was I considered there is an undue emphasis on President Obama.

On a more positive note, I do appreciate CL, I would not look at it so frequently and contribute as much as I do otherwise. I have mentioned on a number of occasions I think it is a blessing for the Church.

Last night we had a Lectio Divina meeting, reflecting on Sunday’s Gospel. The principal insight we got was the way Jesus met and accepted a sinner, Zacchaeus, and treated him with love and respect. It resonated with those attending.

Finally thank you and all in CL for your great work for the Church.

    • Mary Kochan

“I never implied we do not hear of Jesus in CL; my point was I considered there is an undue emphasis on President Obama.” Really? Your snarky question implied that we might think Obama is more important than Jesus. No one makes you read posts on politics. Stop reading them.. If you do read them, just stop commenting on them. It’s so beyond tiresome.

  • noelfitz

    Mary,

thank you for your blunt comment.

I appreciate your view. It makes sense.

  • I love how calm and nice the comments in my section are. :p

This website has a politics section. Politics involves the President. That’s just the way things go. If people want to bring it to a more philosophical level on politics…. they can always submit an article and see what happens.

If you don’t like the way an issue is presented, work to change that.

    • ELC

I publish Daniel Greenfield’s pieces here precisely because he takes a more philosophical approach to politics.

  • Stacy Peterson

Thank you for connecting the historical “dots” for me. Because I now have the “why” behind the systematic effort to deceive the American people, I believe his obfuscating and lying rise to the level of an impeachable offense. His behavior is reprehensible.

    • ELC

      I appreciate your remarks.

  • glen phillips
